the absence of a plan b …

Filed under: Football — notyalcsdrawkcab @ 9:33 am

i am really not sure about my feelings on this …

if a team figures the best way to get the most out of the talent at its disposal is to follow approach A, then it seems a waste to attempt to use approach B or C.  whatever works for you the best, use it.  why use another approach.  use what your`e good at.

the playoff game between queensland roar and adelaide united is a good example.  qr tried to play “tough”, tried to “win ugly” … except, they didn`t.  they kinda sucked at it.  by abandoning the approach that had gotten them to the game before the grand final, they reduced their chances of getting to the grand final.  imho.  they slowed the pace to no discernable advantage, and played into their opponents` hands.

on the other hand, you have a chelsea, who went over to spain recently and parked a bus in front of goal.  something they don`t often do.  yet, they did it well enough, and go home for the return leg at 0 – 0.  plan B probably got them a much better result than just following their usual plan A. barca get criticised for not having a plan B.  but if they did have a plan B would they be any good at it?

perhaps i shouldn`t be so surprised by all this.  the glasgow clubs are the lords of scotland, yet they go to europe as relative minnows.  the play they use against hamilton athletic will not get them very far against a real madrid, or even a lyon.

so which is it?  horses for courses, or stick with what your`e good at.

f%cked if i know.

  1. Interesting post honourable Clayton san

the challenge for this year’s Brisbane Roar. Perhaps with Sergio, Zullo and Henrieque we will get one game, and with Miller, Renaldo and Nichols another – keep them guess guessing, sub at half time?

Hope we beat Gold Coast 30-0.

  2. i am really not sure how all these pieces are gonna fit together. i got no idea what next season`s A game plan is gonna look like.

and now with the ffa ownership stake, the possible sales of mckay and sergio (didn`t see any rumours, just this weird gut feeling thing) … i really don`t know what to expect from the roar. but farina is a better coach than i thought at the start of last season, and i am hoping to be pleasantly surprised.
